Partick Thistle are running the rule over Gary Mackay-Steven to see if he can help them get over their injury crisis. The attacker is a free agent after he ripped up his Ross County contract before the winter transfer window closed.
What happened?
Jags boss Mark Wilson has a number of injuries and has reached out to GMS. Wilson is running the rule over the former Dundee United and Celtic star over the course of the week. The Firhill outfit have injuries to the likes of Tony Watt, Oisin Smyth and Logan Chalmers, who all face significant time on the sidelines.
Why it matters for Partick
It leaves Thistle a bit short in the forward areas and GMS has been given the chance to fill that void. Thistle are currently second in the Championship and are just five points behind leaders St Johnstone. | Stat | Value | | --- | --- | | League standing | 2nd in Scottish Championship, 66 pts, 17W-15D-4L from 36 games | | Recent form | DDDWD | | Last result | ST Mirren 1-0 Partick (2026-05-25) |
What comes next?
Wilson is looking to turn up the heat on the Perth side and Mackay-Steven could yet add that bit of quality at the top end of the pitch. The Scotland international has had a stellar career, since he came through the youth ranks of Liverpool and Fulham. He had spells at Dundee United, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and Kilmarnock before he returned to first club Ross County last year. He also had a year in Major League Soccer with New York City. Thistle are still pushing to win the league but if they don’t then their season will be extended and they will look to get up via the play-offs. Wilson has defied the odds in his first managerial job by keeping Thistle in the title chase with a much-reduced budget.
